From the heart, and other mushy stuff…….

I am 78 years old.  I still consider myself to be in pretty darned good shape.  I still have most everything that I was born with, minus a gall bladder and a tooth or two.  I have some hair that is greying at the temples.  My wife says that I only have hair at my temples.  I guess she is refering to my rather large part in the middle.

I have been married to my dearest friend and wife, Ann for nearly 55 years.  It is funny that people, including me, don’t start appreciating the obvious things around them until it gets nearly too late.  We have had our ups and downs like any married couple.  Minor spats, nothing ever serious.  I have been faithful, but not to say that I haven’t had temptations placed before me.  You can’t be a wild sax player like I was, and not have a few teeny-boppers chase you around.  But nevertheless, she has stood by me and I love her more as each day goes by.

I was talking to my dearest (next to my wife) friend, Shannon, in Houston yesterday.  My conversation with her was the inspiration for this post.  I mentioned that I think everything happens for a reason.  When certain people come into your life there is a reason for it.  She is one of those people, and we met last year near the time I was hospitalized.  While in the hospital, she kept a continual on-line conversation going with me, while trying to take care of her own family of a husband and four children.  Ann and I have become great friends with her and of her family.  We are in contact with them almost daily and it has lightened our lives immensely.  I truly believe that Ann and I have been much closer since that time, as those three hospital stays opened our eyes that the years are passing.

I don’t know why I picked today, Memorial Day, to write this post.  It just happened to be fitting.  As I said everything happens for a reason.  And today, I am thankful for everything and everyone around me.  I knew what I wanted to write about, after my conversation with Shannon yesterday.  I just didn’t know how or when I was going to do it.  But wanting to write while the thoughts were fresh on my mind, I decided to get after it this morning.

So I am sorry there are no pictures today.  By the way, I am happy with being 78.  I like the sound of it, and maybe I’ll just keep it.  So far it has kept me from visiting the local senior center.  That is where all the old people hang out.

Now that I have written all of this mushy stuff, I am going to count to ten, then decide if I want to publish it.

Oh, hell, I only got to seven.  Darn right, I am going to publish it. 🙂

  1. Absolutely agree with everyone, this is a wonderful post and thanks so much. I have yet to meet a sax player I didn’t like. As a matter of fact the leader of our trip Memorial Day weekend is a professional sax player, and now that I know him he has proved to be one of the dearest people I know. Sax players can have it all (and deserve it). 🙂

    • Thanks, Lisa. I was a pro for about 40 years and have seen it all. I am proud to say that I was one of the best, having appeared with some of the best entertainers in the business. On my About Me page, I have a handsome photo of me on the job. Now I channel all of my creativity into my photography. 🙂

P.S. I am thinking about adding a page to my blog, chronicling my music career more in-depth. If I do, I will let you know.

  2. Bob, I admire your take on life. Your post is a good reminder to express gratitude to those who enrich our lives. So glad I came across your post today…another happy accident. 🙂

  3. Bob, I wish I had the words…like all the rest of the folks who have commented. I too am glad I found you and your blog…I’ve been following since the first month I started with WordPress (2 years ago) and I am always thrilled to see your photos and chuckle/grin/big smile at your sense of humor. You’re a good man.

    • Thanks, Dave, for those kind words, and I want you to know that I count you among my many friends. I hope both of us are still around for a long time to come. 🙂

  4. Bob – You know I don’t comment often but I can’t not comment about this incredible post. Not to minimize Shannon’s value as a friend in any way, it’s easy for me to see why anyone would want to be your friend having had the extreme pleasure of enjoying your company. When I ended up in San Angelo on business so far away from my home in California, you and Ann invited me into your lives as if we’d known each other forever. San Angelo will always feel like my home away from home because of you two. You are both special people and well deserving of many more years with each other. Those of us who so enjoy your amazing photos and humorous and pithy prose pray for many more years as well. Thank you for sharing yourself and your talents with us. God gave us life to enjoy and you are showing us all how to do that. Bless you and Ann . . my friends. Also, thank you for your service to our country.

    • Thanks for your comment, Jim. I could have been anybody, but by chance, it took Shannon’s attention that finally opened my eyes to see that I had so many friends, including you, that really had such influence on me. I had been selfish, not paying enough attention to others. I am glad that we had so much effect on you, and value you as another great friend. I do hope you can get another chance to visit here.

  5. I am glad that you took the time to be grateful and to express appreciation for your wife and friend. We don’t always hear this enough. It doesn’t matter how long you have been together, a hug and a kiss and holding hands are always special.Keep enjoying the beauty of life and staying “young at heart.” Have you seen that movie by the same name?

  6. Enjoyed this post, Bob! So nice to read your words of gratitude for the people in your life. I will take this opportunity to say how much I appreciate your photos and essays, no matter the subject!

  7. Great Post..did a show, said all night in our conversion van coming home, fishing was no good, water to high, but we had the most wonderful campfire breakfast, and totally quiet time with each other, reflecting and knowing how the years are flying by. Show was okay, but the big thrill was the quiet time..oh by the way we were at 9000 foot elevation and were visited by beautiful Anna’s Hummingbirds..enjoy your life and God Bless,…thanks for the post..

  8. Bob, what a lovely post and I am glad you decided to publish it! Sometimes life has a way of making you stop and think, and count your blessings. You are lucky to have such wonderful friends but I can also see (from their words) that they think the world of you, and that you are quite good at hiding your own kindness and generosity! What you get is what you give – that is a very true saying in life. I would also like to add, while you’ve still got the tissues out (!) that I am very glad I stumbled across your blog when I did – it was one of the first I came across after setting up my WordPress account – and I feel like I’ve gained a friend, like most of your readers seem to do! So don’t go anywhere near that old folks’ centre just yet! 🙂

    • Thanks, Jo, for your wonderful comment. I do know that you have been one of my many loyal readers and commenters and I you are definitely one of my best friends across the ‘pond’. 🙂

  9. I have met some wonderful people on WordPress. Some with who I’ve really “connected” as a human being (like you) and others who are no less important coaches who help keep me on my path, urging me to be the best me I can be. Thank you for the beautifully written and romantic post. I’m glad to know I can inspire for more than just herding kids or stealing trash! LOL

It is you, Bob, who’ the gem. Not a diamond in the rough, so to speak, which needs honing and chiseling to become more catching to the eye with each new facet. No, you are that rare wonderful PERFECT stone that has just the right color, just the right feel, soothing — the one I want to carry around in my pocket.

Judging from the comments before me, you have touched many lives; not just mine.

I treasure you and Ann both and look forward to our many years of friendship, many more years of marriage between us (more than 70 so far), and perhaps even my topping your life bird list one day.

Yep. A keeper indeed. *patting my pocket*

    • Shannon, what I can I say. I am at a lost for words. That is the most beautiful comment you could have written. You definitely brought tears to my eyes. You have cemented a lasting loving friendship, that I will cherish for the rest of my life.

  10. Good for you, Bob! Congratulations to you and Ann for reaching this stage of your lives and being so content, happy, and in love! I always enjoy your pictures, as well as your comments!

  11. Hello Bob,
I got your new in my inbox every time you have some news posted. I am not always in the mood to see anything – but I love your photos – and yes I read about your and Ann’s friend and about you being 78 – I love the sound too of that numbers. I just got retired in January and I love the freedom being a senior person – strange thing I still feel like 35 and I don’t know that woman which looking back to me until I remember 😉 – Sometimes, Bob it is necessary to write ones thought on “paper” not always necessary to publish. Life is just great. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us – I loved to read them 🙂 (live in Denmark)

  12. Bob, some more years in the future I’d love to read about the reason that you feel like writing again and then learn that your hair part is getting just a bit wider! Happy Memorial Day!

  13. Perfect sentiment, perfectly said, Bob! I haven’t commented for a while – busy with other things – but I always read and enjoy your posts! You are the man – and even though I am thousands of miles away, I still class you as a friend!

    Cheers!

    John

  14. Bob…your words are as beautiful as your photos. Not to promote my blog, but I want people to know how much you have touched the lives of those around you, so I will link to something I wrote about you…my friend. I can not think of a higher form of compliment than to call a man “my friend”. With love and admiration, Toby, Heather, Issy and Bailey.

The first part of the post is about Bob’s book going on sale, so it’s a little dated. The part following the Book Promo is, however, NOT dated…perhaps it is even more true than it was when I put it together.
