Here in San Angelo there are several Great Blue Heron rookeries. One is downtown along the Concho River near Santa Fe Golf course. Ann and I visited there yesterday and after observing and photographing them, we decided that there are about six to eight breeding pairs there. Because of the dense foliage it was difficult to get an exact count. But I did get several photographs. Click the images to see enlargements.
In the above photo I believe there are a total of four young ones.
It was great fun watching them. The children were keeping a constant ‘chuk, chuk, chuk’ going on. I guess they are always hungry. These nest were about 200 yards away in trees across the river. I photographed them with my Canon EOS 70D and Tamron 150-600mm lens. Of course, all images were tightly cropped. If you are reading this in your e-mail, click on the title, and you will be able to click on the images to enlarge them and examine them in greater detail.
Wonderful photos of the GBH, Bob, especially love the babies! 🙂
Thanks, Donna. I need to get back down there and see how they are doing. 🙂
Well Bob, I just ordered mine. I’m your exneighbor on Oak Canyon. I am now south of you in the Corpus Christi area on the Gulf Coast. I hope to get in on the bird migrations. Good pictures.
Thanks, Jerry. I hope you have the same success with that lens that I have. You should get some great bird photos at your new location. The migration is happening right now.
Stunning photos once again!! Loved them all but I think my favorite is the first one of the mother and child. Something about that one really struck me on a different level. What a wonderful place to visit and a gift to see the babies. They do have quite scowl-y faces. 🙂
I agree. There is something poignant about that first one. Glad you liked them, Amy. The babie are so ugly, they are cute. 🙂
Amazing pics, Bob – I should think you’re proud of those, especially the last one which is spot on! The babies look to be well grown already.
Thanks, Jo for your nice comment. I really like the last one for the sharpness that I got with my lens.
We have a small Great Blue Heron Rookery near a small lake up here in Wyoming. Planning to go there next week, unless incoming snow storm makes a mess of things!
Many thanks for comment, Jane. I appreciate it very much.
I love these photos, especially the ones of the babies. Your photos are always so very good, you know! The Great Blue is my favorite of the herons. I really enjoyed these images, Bob.
Thanks, George. I appreciate you taking the time to comment. I’m glad you are enjoying my photos.
You have a real love for these birds..it shows in your photos.. Absolutely beautiful and the detail is incredible..love them all..
Thank you very much, Syl.
Well, you know how I feel about GBHs so I am overjoyed to see such fine images on your blog. I feel like there are some here too but I don’t get out enough to find the. Great photos, Bob.
I thought you would like these, Jim. Glad you did. 🙂
As usual, Bob, your shots are both sharp and beautiful. I finally succumbed to temptation and put in an order for the Tamron 150-600mm lens, and now I have to wait for the next factory shipment to merchants. No more excuses for me!
I hope you enjoy the same success that I am having, Dwynne. Congrats on taking the big step. 🙂
Your photos are excellent Bob! You made a good buy with that Tamron lens. I read very good reviews about it! 🙂
Thanks very much, H.J. I am having a blast with it. A great investment. 🙂
